Daylight for BNA Building of the Year.

House on 't Raboes is best building 2021. This project by Architect De Kort van Schaik was voted number 1 in the Private Residential category by the jury of BNA Best Building of the Year. Bringing daylight inside, with large minimalist rooflights that was a requirement of the architect.

House on ‘t Raboes

‘The most beautiful spot in the Netherlands’; that is the country house in the marina ‘t Raboes according to the owners. Located on Lake Eemmeer, it is a place in the middle of nature, far from the hustle and bustle of the city. The architect designed the connection to the outside in various ways. The large rooflights bring daylight into the house and frame the surroundings.

Lots of light, no framework

The horizontal application of large glass surfaces demands a lot from the design. Our design principles fit directly with what the architect had in mind. No framework in sight. Insulated glass with excellent insulation values. The glass blends seamlessly into the architect’s design. The three large modular rooflights bring the outdoor feeling inside.

Jury report praises connection with landscape

The jury report praises the way the house is part of the landscape, like a concrete boulder in the glass. The jury: “This house stands beautifully in the landscape, the spatial concept is ‘fantastically worked out’, every corner surprises. The love of making is palpable; in the process, client – who built the design with his own company – and architect worked closely together. This house is a Gesamtkunstwerk that is right down to the smallest detail.” Read the full jury report for more words from the judges about House on ‘t Raboes and the other nominees and winners.

Outdoor bathroom with unique sculpture

A beautiful contrast is created by the yellow epoxy bath furniture, designed by Sabine Marcelis. A cabinet consisting of bathtub, wash tub and shower stands as a freestanding sculpture in the concrete bathroom. The rooflight forms an all-glass roof, giving you an even greater sense of being outdoors.  Sabine Marcelis herself says she designed her dream bathroom. The subtle rotation of the cabinet gives you a fantastic view of the landscape from the bathtub.

The House on ‘ Raboes in the media

The Volkskrant gives the House on ‘t Raboes five stars. “The Rotterdam architectural firm De Kort Van Schaik designed a house in which you live with the elements and at the same time are protected from them, thanks to a thick concrete coat.”

Light and blackout – Topshade solar shading applied

The large rooflights intelligently use recessed insulated glass in an aluminum frame with a silicone joint. This creates a high-quality insulated glass system that is very easy to mount on an upstand.

In order to also make it possible to darken the rooms, custom-made Topshade blinds have been applied. More about this form of sun protection can be found in the article on sun protection for rooflights.
