Explanation: Sliding Box: Rooftop access compared

With the Sliding Box, Dutch Roof Design offers the most luxurious and comfortable access to your roof terrace. But what makes a Sliding Box different from a roof hatch, and what are the possibilities? In this article, we'll explain everything and provide plenty of inspiration from various applications of our Sliding Box around the world.

Two types of Sliding Box

First of all, it's good to know that there are two types of Sliding Box: a completely freestanding, entirely glass box, and a so-called Three-Wall Box, which is placed between three walls. In both types, the glass entrance consists of two parts: a fixed section and a sliding section. The sliding section slides over the fixed section, creating a 50% clear opening, allowing the user to walk through the entrance to the outside.

Why a sliding box?

A Sliding Box is the ultimate roof access point: its minimalist design is visually appealing, and its height also allows for comfortable access to any roof terrace. In some situations, a limited staircase height would require stooping through a roof hatch. This isn't necessary with a box that offers sufficient height, where one section slides open over the fixed section. Because the height can vary between 400 and 1500mm, this access point can also be used in urban areas like IJburg and Amsterdam City Center, where buildings are not permitted higher than 1,20m, and a roof house is therefore not permitted.

Even more benefits?

  • Simple electrical operation: the box opens at the touch of a button.
  • The box is fully insulated and waterproof. It can be fitted with double glazing (or even triple glazing for freestanding units) for even better thermal performance.
  • Can also be used for ventilation by leaving the box slightly ajar.
  • Unique glass-on-glass connections.

How big can a sliding box be?

We manufacture the Sliding Box entirely to your specifications and, in our standard production process, can handle up to 6m² of surface area for the 3-Wall Box, for example, with a box measuring 2 by 3 meters, or one and a half by 4 meters. The Freestanding Box can be even larger, up to 8,4m².

Three Wall Box: Max surface: 6m2
Width: 1100-2400mm
Length: 1700 -4200mm
Internal height: 300-1500 (height of the top of the upstand – internal height of the bottom of the roof section)

Sliding Box: Max surface: 8,4 m2
Width: 1300-3500mm
Length: 1500-4000mm
Height: 850-1500mm (this is the height from the top of the upstand to the top of the highest edge of the product).

The difference between a Sliding Box and a Three Wall Box explained in more detail

Besides the larger surface area possible with the Sliding Box, there's another difference. The Sliding Box can be positioned completely freestanding on the roof terrace and is constructed entirely of glass. This allows even more daylight to enter the floor below. The Three-Wall Box is installed between three walls, and because less glass is required, the price is also slightly lower. Often, one of the building's existing structural walls is used, possibly supplemented with one or more walls added later. Below are two examples:

This freestanding sliding roof access in IJburg allows for the creation of the largest possible roof terrace within the permit space, offering a comfortable escape. This significantly enhances the living experience and increases the value of the house thanks to the additional square footage.

Three Wall Box France

The Three Wall Box in France is located on the side of the roof terrace and offers a wealth of space. By incorporating greenery and wooden panels on one side and a glass fence on the other, there's room for both privacy and shelter, as well as a beautiful unobstructed view.

How safe and sustainable is a sliding box?

When it comes to sustainability, the box is a winner. Made with double or even triple glazing, with a special argon-filled cavity and a coating that keeps heat out in the summer and in in the winter. The thermally broken frame prevents unnecessary heat loss. Furthermore, the aluminum frame and glass are sustainable materials. Aluminum has a long lifespan and can be recycled without deterioration. The glass is also at least HR++, and in triple glazing, even HR+++.

Several features ensure the Sliding Box is extremely safe to use. First of all, its design eliminates the need for fencing or partitions, which is often desirable with a roof hatch. Furthermore, a built-in motion sensor detects if, for example, a child is in the opening and automatically stops the box from closing. Special anti-burglary features also provide additional security.

Additional options

The Sliding Box comes standard with a wall switch, which opens or closes the box at the touch of a button. You can optionally expand this with a keypad mounted on the outside, which allows you to open or close the box with a code. A remote control is also available as an option. We can even connect the box to your home automation system, allowing you to control roof access with your phone.

Keypad

With a rain sensor, you can ensure the box closes automatically when it rains. This is handy if you forget to close the door on a busy summer day and it suddenly starts raining while you're working downstairs.

Besides these options, there are countless possibilities with glass specifications, such as extra solar control glass and frame color. Let us know your requirements, and we'll help you figure out what's possible.

Sun protection, what if I place the box above a bedroom?

If you want to make the roof accessible from your bedroom, it's nice if the box can also be darkened. We offer a custom solution for this with our Topshade. It provides extra sun protection but can also completely darken the box, depending on the fabric you choose.
