Explanation: Large rooflight in sloped roof
Tip 1: Integrate the rooflight as flat as possible into the roof
To connect the rooflight watertight, an upstand of 150 mm high is needed. By countersinking this with a concealed channel in the roof package, the rooflight will lie as flat as possible in the roof.
The skylight falls over the upstand like a lid and provides a watertight (if properly fitted) seal.
In short:
- wooden upstand 150mm high
- upstand is watertight and connected with zinc or similar to the tiled roof
- the rooflight falls over it like a lid.
Please note that the skylight is made of real glass and is therefore quite heavy. We never install a skylight from the inside but always from the outside using a crane. We assume that the upstand has been prepared (by a third party) before we install the skylight. The zinc is not supplied with the window.
Pictured below:
The tiled roof will be almost flush with the rooflight. Of course, this can also be done with a slate roof.
- From inside, the large rooflight has the Sky Only View
The example below clearly shows the effect of a large rooflight in the sloped roof. Because the upstand falls outside the notch, no frame can be seen from the inside as with traditional skylights. A fantastic minimalist effect.
Tip 2: Use a modular rooflight for even more daylight
A one-piece rooflight can already be very large, depending on the ratio of length to width. By working with modular rooflights, where glass sections are connected with a slim aluminium T-profile, you can actually go as big as you want. The great thing is, from the inside there is always the Sky Only View: there are no ugly frames or window frames in sight. As an architect, you can design with daylight.
Tip 3: Economical solution with standard sizes
Did you know that we also sell our rooflights in standard sizes? We were able to produce these in larger quantities and are therefore more economical. By applying one or more of these standard sizes, you get a great effect for a smaller budget. Check our webshop for prices.
Tip 4: Use electric blinds/shades
In summer, it can get quite hot under a pitched roof. Our rooflights can be fitted with customised electric blinds. This keeps the heat and sun out. The blinds protect you from sunlight in an inconspicuous way. The sunlight is filtered through the special fabric and still allows you to look out through your skylight during the day. This preserves the rooflight’s spatial effect. The fabric acts as a true thermal shield. It blocks up to 97% of the heat and the micro-perforated screen still lets light into the house.
Up to a size of about 3 m2 , the rooflight can even be fitted with a full blackout screen. This comes in handy in a bedroom. This fabric is a lot heavier, which is why it cannot be used on larger rooflights.
The blinds work electrically. You choose whether you want a remote control, or whether you want to connect the system to your home automation system, such as Google Home.
